The Hierophant

What do you think of when you think of someone who is close to God?

The Hierophant is a tricky card. For many people, the idea of religious authority is one of repression and corruption. And make no mistake, in the wrong hands, it can be just that.

But religious authority can also be an individual who comes to that authority from a closeness to God. Someone who has worked and studied and tangled themselves in the mysteries of their faith.

But even more than that, this is someone who takes on the obligations that come with faith. The obligations to God, to the community, and to themselves. Knowing that while these may at times be a burden, they are obligations willingly and joyfully taken on.

So often, then, the Hierophant will not be showy, but will be the person who is tending the quiet flames. Lighting candles, saying prayers, reading scripture, and holding out a hand for those who wish to join them.
