Sometimes, soul-deep pain is necessary. It can clear the way for growth and change, it can open up new possibilities once the grief has been moved through. It washes the wound clean, provides needed catharsis to the broken heart. An infected injury must be lanced to allow the poison to drain; only then can healing begin.

Or sometimes someone sucker punches you, apropos of nothing, and there you are bent over in pain as they walk away laughing.
